What is the Barrhaven Express...
The Barrhaven Express was a group ride organized by Doug Grose, departing from the Walter Baker Sports Center – 100 Malvern Drive, Nepean (Barrhaven) most weekends beginning some time in April each year. The distances in the past have ranged from 60K to 180K.
History of the Barrhaven Express…
The Barrhaven Express was started by Doug Grose and Rick Branchaud (formerly known as The Boys from Barrhaven). The two met while cycling on Malakoff Road, south-west of Ottawa and have trained together for many Ironman races. Over the years, others have joined the two. The name ‘Barrhaven Express’ originated when one unhappy individual showed up for a ride cancelled by rain and complaining that he showed up in Barrhaven ready to ride but the Express left without him. In the beginning the small group of riders always met in Doug’s garage in Barrhaven. But as the group grew, Doug’s popularity with his neighbor’s began to shrink due to everyone parking on the street. So, the departure meeting place was changed to the Walter Baker Sports Center in Barrhaven. For a number of reasons, including family commitments, Doug was unable to commit to riding on a regular basis. As a result, the Barrhaven Express ended. However, a number of people requested safe ride routes south-west of Ottawa. For this reason, I have left this website active, so that the Barrhaven Express route descriptions are still available to whomever. |
